Hiring a boat is an excellent way to discover the hidden treasures in the unique coastline of Patmos, spanning at a length of 63 km. Patmos has many sheltered bays, beaches and a complex of islands nearby that can only be visited with a private boat cruise. From the Port of Skala you can easily find the ideal catamaran, sailboat, motor yacht or speedboat of your choice. You can directly contact the owners of the vessels for the ideal boat or simply allow a BednBlue travel expert to guide you with some suggestions.
You have plenty of options:
You can book and hire a sailboat or speedboat with a skipper, or without if you own a license and enjoy a one-day cruise to Tragonisi. You can also rent a motorboat and visit multiple bays and beaches along the unique coastline in a short amount of time. With the option to book a catamaran you can enjoy an excursion to the islands of Arki and Lipsi for a 2-day or 3-day trip. Finally, you can charter a luxury sailboat or traditional yacht and visit Leros further away or the Southern area of Patmos for as many days as you please.
Patmos is a beautiful island in the Dodecanese attracting numerous visitors annually who want to enjoy a peaceful vacation. On the one hand, Patmos gains its reputation as the ‘Jerusalem of the Aegean’ with its strong presence of ecclesiastical art (there are over 50 churches!) and architecture included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Monuments. On the other hand, Patmos is more than just a pilgrimage site but a destination with a chic twist. Foreigners seem to fall in love with the summer houses, tourist shops, low-key nightlife options, marvelous beaches and the network of old paths and come back every summer for more. No words can describe the earthly spirit present in Patmos, an island where the Holy Monastery of Saint John, the Holy Cave of Apocalypse and the medieval settlement of Chora form a true ‘Aegean revelation’. There are many things to do in Patmos, the aristocratic capital known as Chora and the accommodating settlement of Skala have all kinds of facilities and always leave visitors speechless. The Monastery of St. John dominates the hill above Chora and serves as a place of worship for more than 900 years, both Orthodox and Catholic pilgrims flock here to see this landmark. Along with Folegandros and Amorgos, Patmos has one of the most charming capitals in Greece as it has managed to maintain its authentic and traditional character. Neoclassical buildings, winding alleys and blooming gardens create an amazing constant. Patmos blends together a divine and cosmopolitan feel that really draws you in, making you feel unique and alive. By renting a boat along the coastline, you can take advantage of the season at hand and take in an experience you never thought was possible. The captivating waters of the Aegean are waiting to be discovered with the yacht of your choice for an unforgettable vacation.
Boat charter in Patmos will allow you to visit entire gulfs, virgin bays and dock into several beach restaurants on the way. Departing from the main port of Skala you can visit Meloi beach and stop for a quick swim. If you continue sailing north there are two pebbly bays known as ‘Didimes’ or Linginou beaches which have crystal clear waters and are ideal for tranquility. You can head further up, admiring the rocky coastline and making stops in the settlement of Kambos where you can practice water sports and enjoy a well-known beach bar nearby. Vagia, Livadi tou Geranou, Lampi and Agriolivado are some other organized beaches you can enjoy with a catamaran excursion and take a break to eat in picturesque taverns. Heading the other direction from the port of Skala you can visit one of the island’s trademarks known as “Petra tou Kalikatsou'' in Grikos beach, a former shelter for hermits which would hollow out of colored shells. The bay resembles a lake and is connected with a peninsula with the island of Tragonisi offering plenty of space for sailboats, catamarans and motor yachts. This narrow strip of land with a rock emerging from the sea to the mainland creates mesmerizing scenery. 4.5 km from Griko you can stop near the coast and visit Chora where you can explore the alleys or enjoy a lunch in any of the restaurants.
Whether first-timers or not, Patmos boat tours are highly recommended with a skipper who knows the area well. Far from any tourism, Patmos has an entire complex around Arkious, a big island with a radius of beaches spanning at a length of 25 km. Here you will also discover Argelousa, Koumaros, Tsouka, Makronisi, Stroguli, and many more islands. Marathi and Tiganakia have turquoise blue waters and you can indulge in never-ending dives. You can even enjoy a two-day or three-day cruise to Lipsi, a complex of 30 islands that are interconnected with underwater caves and a blue lagoon. For a week cruise in the Aegean, you can even visit Leros or organize a trip at the southern-tip of Patmos making stops in Psili Ammos and Prasonisi. Psili Ammos is one of the most beautiful beaches of Patmos with large volumes of sandy dunes and often hard to reach, we recommend a sailboat with a skipper to ensure safety and comfort. You can also stop by Diakofti Beach, a large private dock with a traditional maritime restaurant where you can taste the local dishes of Patmos. Sailing in Patmos is certainly an experience you cannot miss, allowing you to discover the well-kept secrets of the Aegean.
