Leros is situated between Patmos and Kalymnos and urges you to enjoy an authentic Greek island experience. Leros is presumed to come from the word “Levros” meaning smooth, contrasting the mountainous regional unit of Kalymnos that it is part of. Leros has one of the best natural ports in the Mediterranean, Lakki, a former naval station for Italians who attempted to plan an urban city with rationalist architecture. Nowadays, the Agora, cinema, Town Hall and many neoclassical buildings carry the remnants of the second world war era. The battle of Leros ended the 31 years of Italian ruling and the strategic advantage they had in the Aegean, Dardanelles and the Middle East. “The guns of Navarone” is a novel and film that was inspired from the notorious battle, and many sunken shipwrecks you can visit today are scattered around the island. For some sightseeing, the Medieval Castle of Panteli is a fortress offering panoramic views of the Aegean and exhibiting a collection of ancient works of art. You can also visit the Leros War Museum and acquaint yourself with the detailed history of the island. Free from the turbulent past of the island, one can taste local specialties in the capital known as Platanos or enjoy a simple afternoon stroll. Leros is ignored by mass tourism and averages out with 300 days of sunshine per year. A sailing holiday will allow you to unfold the unspoiled natural beauty along the coastal areas and dive in many ancient shipwrecks around the island.

Boat tours in Leros can be organized for guests who want to spend a day or two discovering private beaches. Alinda, Vromolithos and Panteli are the most famous beaches of the island, large, sandy and many shops and taverns ashore. By departing from Agia Marina you can cruise to the wide sweep of Alinda bay. Here you can also stop to visit the Belleni Tower featuring Roman and Gothic architecture, or catch a sunset up the church of Agios Isidoros. For complete seclusion, you can enjoy a catamaran excursion in the pebbly cove of Kryfos hidden among rocks and great for snorkeling too. Dio Liskaria is a famous cove well protected from the winds that attracts various ages, nearby you will find beach bars. Blefoutis and Agia Kioura are located on the north side of the island and are one of the most isolated beaches of Leros.

On the west side of the island, you can organize a boat trip from Leros to Patmos. If you have a limited amount of time, you can hire a motorboat or speedboat from the Port of Lakki and visit destinations such as Lipsi, on a one or two-day cruise. A lot of boat charterers like to head to Leros from Kalymnos and then to Patmos for example, but the choice is completely yours. There are also small islands around Leros you might like to visit such as the island Archangelos and the islet of Agia Kiriaki just opposite Panteli and Vromolithos. You can also arrange a half-day cruise to Marathi and Tiganakia which have crystal clear waters. With the opportunity to hire a sailboat with a skipper you can cruise around the Dodecanese islands for two weeks. Astypalaia, Kos and Rhodes are some other choices you can add to your island hopping itinerary in the Greek islands.
