Nisyros isn’t the standard holiday Greek island being a prominent volcanic island in the Aegean. It attracts tourists interested in exploring the outdoors. Over the past 130 years, the volcano has been dormant, but it’s still an active one, one of the few you can explore in Europe. According to mythology, the Greek god Poseidon cut off a piece of Kos, tossed it with force, and exterminated the giant Polyvotes. In the giant’s attempt to flee, the trident became Nisyros and was called Porphyris at the time. An interesting fact about Nisyros is that it is home to some of the most impressive hiking trails.


There are more than 40 routes to explore. Some pass through Paleokastro, an ancient fort with enormous cyclopean stones. Others will take you among some unique natural landscapes. The port and capital of Nisyros is known as Mandraki, you can visit the ancient acropolis which used to be the island’s capital and is still well-preserved. Moreover, you can take the time to visit the village of Nikia right opposite, filled with pastry shops and offering amazing sea views. The pristine coasts attract you with turquoise waters which you can swim all day long with your favorite catamaran, sailboat, motor yacht or speedboat of your choice.
