Lefkada was named after the famous white cliffs of Cape Doukato (Cape Lefkatas), which was dedicated to the Greek god Apollon in ancient times. The legend says that the famous poet Sappho committed suicide by jumping off the cliffs because of her love for Phaon the ferryman. On the entrance of the island, one can catch sight of the ancient castle of Agia Mavra and the sacred Monastery of Profitis Ilias on the eastern coast, which has excellent panoramic views of Lefkada island. In terms of Geography, Lefkada is the fourth-largest island in the Ionian Sea and lies north of Zakynthos and south of Corfu. The comparative advantage to the other Greek islands is that Lefkada is easily accessible by car, ferry, or boat due to its proximity to the mainland which is connected by a bridge that allows the passage of vehicles and boats.
