The shoreline reveals some important traditional villages and countless sites you cannot miss. The town of Myrina is the capital of Lemnos. A picturesque seaside settlement with cobblestone alleys and an imposing castle located at the highest point on the island. From the commands of the Byzantine Empire to the ruling of Venetians, the castle was fortified by Emperor Komnenos in 1886 AD and Filocalo Navigajiosi (the Great Duke of Lemnos) in the 13th century. Romeikos Gialos constitutes one of the main districts of Lemnos and houses the impressive Archaeological Museum presenting the historical development of the island. Other sights worth visiting to better understand the history and culture of the island include the Archaeological site of Hephaestus and the Caves of Philoctetes.
