The Lichades islands or Lihadonisia emerged from an earthquake in 426 BC and currently join the northern Evoikos Gulf with the Gulf of Malia. According to mythology, the islands took their name from Lichas who was handed the garment of Nessus from Deianeira to poison Heracles. Heracles held Lichas responsible for the tunic and hurled him into the sea, the shape of his body formed the Lichades islands! Although these islands were once inhabited, they are currently deserted and have turned into a popular tourist hotspot in recent years.
